Great underrated film— I like the over the top visual poetry of noir a lot, but I agree with you on this excellent film working just fine without the usual visual emphasis. “Mo’s okay— she’s gotta eat.”
I believe that a film can be a Noir without the trademark cinematography and a film with it may not be a Noir. That’s why I prefer to focus on the themes and characters.
After many years of obsessive film noir research, my feeling is that if a film is even in the neighborhood of film noir, it’s probably worth checking out.
This is Fuller firing on all cylinders. Tightly paced, bombastic, tough and yet possessing redemption.
