For me, LOST HIGHWAY is a fascinating warm-up for MULHOLLAND DR which takes the former's structure and reverses it. While LH starts in reality and moves into the mind of the protagonist, MD starts off in the mind of the protagonist and moves into reality.

Love, love, love LOST HIGHWAY. Yes, it is inscrutable, but so what. It's so full of spooky atmosphere, jazziness, and dark sexuality that it doesn't have to make sense. Lynch pushes his own brand of twisty logic in the film and its up to us to make sense of it or not. Its like jazz improv. If you're looking for a steady melody, you're bound to be disappointed. But if you're into the atmosphere, you're going to dig LOST HIGHWAY on so many levels. Lynch makes the audience work on this one and that's a good thing. He makes you want to watch it again and again. And, like a delicious meal, the film's darkness sticks to your ribs for a long time. Don't check your brain at the door with LH. Keep it in your pocket.
